The inspiration for this embroidery is the finely carved West Window in the church of St Nicholas at Teddington, Gloucestershire. The window was reputedly taken from Hailes Abbey after the dissolution of the monasteries. The background design for the embroidery is taken from a decorative border painted onto one of the church walls.
I printed this border design onto pieces of silk which I then free machined to a background fabric of hand dyed Silk Noil together with some pieces of gold organza.
I then made another print block and printed the design of the window onto this stitched background fabric. The window design was then free machine embroidered further.
The whole piece was then Hand Stitched with a variety of threads including gold.
